Refunds of Air Ticket

September 1, 2024

Sometimes, plans change, and you may not be able to fly as scheduled. This could be due to unforeseen circumstances such as medical issues, a death in the family, or other disruptions. In such cases, you can request a refund for your air ticket, provided you understand the applicable terms and conditions of the ticket.

Refunds for Mandatory Charges

Whether your ticket is *refundable or **non-refundable, you are entitled to request a refund for mandatory charges if you decide not to travel. These mandatory charges include:

  • ✓ Passenger Service Charges (PSC)

  • ✓ Taxes, fees, and charges imposed by the Government and prescribed by any written law

  • ✓ Fuel surcharges

  • ✓ Other fees and charges determined by the Commission to be imposed on consumers by airlines, such as carbon fees

Processing Refunds

Airlines must remit refunds within 30 days in the original mode of payment once the request is made. If the ticket is purchased from a travel agent or through any travel agent portal, the airline shall remit any refund within 30 days from the date that the request has been made by the travel agent or travel portal.

Administration Fees

  • ✓ For non-refundable tickets, airlines can charge an administration fee of up to 5% for processing refunds of PSC, taxes, fees, and charges.

  • ✓ For refundable tickets, airlines cannot charge any additional administration fees beyond what is specified in the ticket’s terms and conditions.

Note:

* A refundable ticket allows you to get a refund or reschedule your flight, subject to the terms and conditions specified by the airline and is generally more expensive.

** A non-refundable ticket, such as a promotional fare, does not allow a refund of the ticket price but still entitles you to claim refunds for mandatory charges like PSC, taxes, and fees.
