Last year, three flights heading to Penang International Airport had to return to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before being diverted to Langkawi International Airport due to bad weather. There were delays, disruptions and changes to flight times.
Incidents like these are referred to extraordinary circumstances.  While quite rare, they do sometimes occur. Airlines are not obliged to pay compensation in extraordinary circumstances, which include:

 

In other instances, the airline will most likely need to offer some form of compensation. When such incidents occur, contact your airline immediately to discuss your options.
